Fatigue research.
Real applications.

N4RIX researches remote photoplethysmography (rPPG), physiological signals and methods for assessing fatigue from camera video. Our first product under development applies this work to online learning. We are also studying where the same technology may be useful in other settings.

01 / Our mission

Researching fatigue
without contact.

N4RIX studies whether physiological signals estimated from ordinary camera video can contribute to fatigue research. The work begins with remote photoplethysmography, signal quality, and the evaluation of prediction models.

Ongoing doctoral research

rPPG as a shared research technology.

We are investigating camera-based pulse estimation and methods for assessing fatigue. We test the measurements, document their limits, and examine where the research could support practical applications.

Online learning comes first

Our first product project combines classroom tools with optional, consent-based physiological research during online sessions.

Beyond education

Other settings to investigate

Possible research directions include operator fatigue monitoring and, over a longer period, medically supervised telehealth applications. Neither is a released product; an operator fatigue demo, Alertis, is available for research use.

N4RIX is a research platform. Our fatigue models and physiological measurements require further evaluation for each intended use. Current prototypes are not medical devices, and results must not be used to make safety-critical or clinical decisions.

02 / Research direction

From camera signals
to fatigue research.

The core research examines how rPPG signals are acquired, how reliable pulse-derived measurements can be obtained, and whether those measurements support fatigue prediction. Fatigue and engagement are separate outcomes and require separate evidence.

01 / ACQUISITION

Camera-based acquisition

Study face-region tracking, acquisition conditions, and signal quality using ordinary cameras with participant permission.

02 / SIGNAL

Pulse and variability measures

Estimate pulse signals and examine HR and pulse-rate variability measures, including RMSSD, SDNN, and spectral features when recording quality and duration allow.

03 / ANALYSIS

Fatigue model evaluation

Train and test fatigue models against appropriate reference labels. Investigate performance across people, devices, lighting, and movement.

04 / RESPONSIBILITY

Research protections

Use clear consent, secure data handling, reproducible evaluation, and careful limits on how experimental findings are presented.

03 / Explore the lab

Selected research
prototypes.

The rPPG Simulator is hosted on Hugging Face, the Evaluator on evaluator.n4rix.com and the Alertis demo on fatigue.n4rix.com. Availability and functionality may change as the research continues.

EXPERIMENT 02

Evaluator

Human validation study: webcam heart rate checked against a chest strap, with consent on screen. For enrolled participants and the research team.

Alertis

Operator fatigue demo. The pulse model runs on the operator's own PC; supervisors see a fatigue state only.

04 / Potential applications

One research base.
Different settings.

Our core work is not limited to virtual classrooms. Each proposed use has different technical, scientific and legal requirements. Online learning is the first product under development.

01 / FIRST PRODUCT

Online learning

Support virtual-classroom research with optional physiological measurements. We are developing the first N4RIX applications for this area.

02 / RESEARCH DEMO

Operator fatigue

Explore whether contactless signals may contribute to fatigue research in operational settings. The Alertis demo shows the idea. Any workplace use will need separate validation, safeguards and clear participation rules.

03 / LONGER TERM

Telehealth

Investigate possible remote physiological measurement for clinician-supported care if future evidence supports it. Clinical studies and applicable medical-device approvals would be required before clinical use.

04 / SHARED TECHNOLOGY

N4RIX Pulse

Develop a reusable rPPG analysis base so future products can be assessed without rebuilding the signal-processing method for every application.

05 / First product in development

Our first product:
online learning.

Education is the first field where we are bringing the N4RIX platform components together. The planned system combines school registration, courses, scheduling, online classes and an optional research module. All listed products are still being developed.

Concept stage
06 / How we work

From research
to software.

We develop and evaluate the underlying research methods, then test them through specific applications. The first integration project connects school accounts, learning management, meetings, and optional rPPG research.

STEP 01

Research and testing

Document methods, test performance and report limitations.

STEP 02

Test with partners

Gather requirements and test prototypes with educators and research partners.

STEP 03

Integrate the applications

Connect registration, Moodle courses and meeting links through common services.

STEP 04

Prepare for deployment

Test security, accessibility, compatibility and deployment procedures.

07 / Research principles

Research needs
reliable evidence.

Contactless measurements and AI predictions are not substitutes for human understanding. The platform will need clear consent processes, access controls and data-retention rules.

Consent and choice

Participation in physiological research should be appropriately authorized, informed and voluntary.

Evidence before claims

Experimental fatigue predictions require validation and clear communication of uncertainty.

Participant data

Where feasible, process camera signals on the participant’s device and restrict access to research records.
